^{In Britain, clothing coupons held until 1949, three coupons to the yard. A single Dior skirt cost more than the entirety of an annual ration. Late-1940’s Europe was plagued by post-war austerity. The New Look was a quantified reckoning on public platform.}

^{Each yard represented a declaration: hardship had ended for those who could afford it.}

The Fury

^{The New Look was an active depiction of who had earned the privilege to abandon struggle.}

^{In October 1947, a campaign shoot on Rue Lepic in Monmartre staged a deliberate paradox: couture against cabbages. Women of the market, outraged, set upon a model and tore the Dior look from her body.}

^{In Dallas, ex-model Bobbie Woodward founded the Little Below the Knee Club, which swelled to 1,300 members and inspired chapters nationwide. They marched under banners reading “Mr. Dior, we abhor dresses to the floor,” and, with a distinct Texan resolve, “The Alamo fell, but our hemlines will not.”}

^{Government officials joined the discourse. Sir Stafford Cripps, President of the Board of Trade, declared “the shorter the skirt, the better” whilst Britain remained desperately short of fabric.}

^{Dior suggested revival, critics argued waste.}

^{In his autobiography, Dior by Dior, the New Look was posed as rejection of the form that war had imposed.}

^{“We were emerging from a period of war, of uniforms, of women-soldiers built like boxers,” he wrote. “I drew women-flowers: soft shoulders, fine waists like liana, wide skirts like corolla.”}

^{Dior’s counter: beauty does not wait for permission from suffering.}

^{“The neglected art of pleasing.”}

The Economics of Surplus

^{Let’s look at a philosophical account of these stakes.}

^{Two years after the New Look’s debut, Georges Bataille published The Accursed Share, a masterwork of economics, arguing that the fundamental problem of any society is not scarcity, rather, surplus. Every economy generates more energy that it can use, and the excess must be spent, “gloriously or catastrophically.”}

^{Glorious: cathedrals, festivals, jewels. Catastrophic: war.}

^{A society that had just consumed its surplus through devastation was therefore left with the question: What would it choose to lavish upon next?}

^{Interpreted in this lens, the New Look is not an aberration of 1947, but its mirror. Europe had expended a decade of excess in munition, Dior proposed expending it in silk. Twenty yards of fabric were not incidental, it was an argument.}

^{The Parisians on Rue Lepic did not misunderstand Dior’s intent. They understood it perfectly.}

^{(That was the problem.)}

^{Women had been dressed for endurance: squared shoulders on a factory floor. Dior asked them to return to an architectural display: cinched waists, skirts ever-consuming. Chanel, who had built her maison’s DNA on combatting this very silhouette, stated Dior “doesn’t dress women, he upholsters them.”}

The Seven-Dollar Opposition

^{Claire McCardell offered a different response to societal load: The Popover, a wrap dress composed of denim, deep pockets, and an oven mitt buttoned at the waist. It sold for $6.95. Over 75,000 moved post-release.}

^{McCardell did not regard shortages as an obstacle to design.}

^{There is a philosophical nature to the contrast of these designs. Dior intended relief through a vessel of escapism, McCardell made freedom synonymous with utilitarianism.}

A Dream and Its Consequence

^{It is tempting to score this as a moral contest and hand McCardell victory, the Popover was democratic and practical.}

^{However, it is a verdict that flatters the instinct to see utility as most virtuous, missing what Dior understood. Subsequent to deprivation, beauty and extravagance could remind society that reality was capable of change.}

^{People crave more than survival. An image can serve as proof that life is still desirable—hunger is not only physical.}

^{Protests collapsed quickly, within two years the Little Below the Knee Club evaporated, its members were wearing the hemlines they marched against. The desire had persisted, waiting for someone shameless enough to dress it.}

^{McCardell’s counter keeps the story honest: beauty that ignores the conditions of the people can curdle into cruelty.}

^{The New Look and the Popover confide in fashion’s moral intelligence. Simultaneously interpreting what a society has survived whilst proposing what it can become.}

^{Bataille would say the surplus gets spent either way, the choice lies in what we make it look like.}

The Origins of Haute Couture

^{Haute couture emerged in nineteenth-century Paris through Charles Frederick Worth, who founded the first true couture house in 1858. Worth presented finished designs on live models, allowing clients to choose among his ideas and adapt them to their own specifications.}

^{By placing his own name at the center of the garment, Worth helped invent the modern designer as a visible author—Cristóbal Balenciaga became Balenciaga, Coco Chanel became Chanel. Name itself became the source of a brand’s meaning, value, and identity.}

^{A decade later, the Chambre Syndicale was formed to protect, regulate, and preserve the standards of the couture profession, laying the foundation for the Fédération as we understand it today. Couture was the language of elite life—salons and private clients; garments tended to with extraordinary attention to one body.}

^{During the twentieth century, Chanel, Dior, Balenciaga, Givenchy, and their peers turned couture into both private wardrobe and public authority. Their work dressed a small class of women, but its silhouettes governed a much larger cultural imagination. Couture proposed not only what elegance looked like, but what femininity and modernity meant on a broader scale.}

^{Ready-to-wear did not deaden couture; it freed it. Released from the obligation to dress its majority of clientele, couture became pure craft, fantasy, and expression. But a discipline with no practical function must continually justify its existence.}

^{Couture has been answering for itself ever since.}

The Changing Dream

^{The opening of Saint Laurent Rive Gauche in 1966 accelerated the separation of designer authority from high dressmaking, YSL proved a couturier could build serious fashion language outside the salon.}

^{Luxury no longer depended upon individual commission; one could enter a house through the boutique. A designer’s vision became reproducible, distributable, and commercially scalable. Ready-to-wear absorbed the practical life of luxury—Couture inherited its metaphysical burden.}

^{This was not merely an economic shift, it rewrote couture’s moral function. As ready-to-wear absorbed the practical life of luxury, couture was recast as the house’s highest expression: the imaginative horizon where craft, fantasy, and prestige could concentrate without regard for scale.}

^{The salon had been built around the intimacy of one body, modern couture addresses a far larger audience, most of whom will never encounter the work beyond an image. Its purpose has become to generate desire at a distance.}

^{The cultural shift worth examining is what role couture plays in a luxury world that is now largely met by ready-to-wear—the freedom that protects Couture also complicates it.}

Image Economy

^{Today, couture is encountered first as image. Collections circulate through the feed, judged less by construction than by their capacity for spectacle. The irony is brutal: a garment that demanded thousands of hours is consumed in seconds.}

^{Novelty trades as the highest value—the technicality and integrity of couture risks obscurity. A garment that shocks is rewarded before one that reveals itself through proportion, cut, craftsmanship.}

^{Marshall McLuhan warned of this in 1964: "the medium is the message" the form through which content travels does not merely carry it, but remakes it in its own image. Couture now travels through a medium engineered for the three-second glance on a screen. A gown designed in the atelier but destined for media is, in McLuhan's terms, no longer quite a gown—it is content wearing one.}

^{This is not to say spectacle is inherently hollow—couture has always thrived on theatricality, fantasy, and dramatic presentation. The tension arrives at a precise point: when visibility stops revealing the work and begins dictating its shape. As Vogue Business observed, couture functions as both an innovation laboratory and a powerful instrument of prestige. Its commercial worth was never in volume, but in the authority it confers upon the house: less profit, more dream.}

^{It is the fantasy that makes a perfume, a handbag, a lipstick, the ready-to-wear feel touched by something higher:}

^{Couture is the altar of its commercial machine.}

^{The threat is inversion—the moment a gown exists in order to sell the lipstick, rather than the lipstick existing in the gown’s reflected light, the altar becomes a billboard.}

^{(No one kneels at a billboard.)}

Avant-Garde VS Couture

^{Matthieu Blazy's Spring–Summer 2026 couture debut for Chanel was built from transparency, muslin, birds, and the suit reimagined as "a second skin." Much of the commentary that followed measured the collection against avant-garde expectations. It's a useful mistake, because it reveals how thoroughly we've forgotten what couture is, and what it is not.}

^{Couture does not prove itself through conceptual extremity. It is a licensed discipline, governed by the Fédération’s strict criteria, a system of sanctioned difficulty. Avant-garde is something else entirely: an attitude of rupture, existing to disturb form, material, and use. One is a system of making; the other is a position of refusal.}

^{Couture can become avant-garde, it is not avant-garde by nature.}

^{The confusion is understandable, and modern couture has helped create it. In an image economy, the quietness of construction is harder to communicate than a shocking silhouette. Concept travels faster than craft, couture increasingly borrows the avant-garde's language to justify its visibility.}

^{The cost is subtle but consequential. Once couture begins to believe its value depends on appearing extreme, it mistakes one kind of difficulty for difficulty itself.}

The Modern Function

^{The deeper question is not whether couture should be wearable, it has always exceeded ordinary use. The question is whether it still belongs to the body, or whether the body has become collateral.}

^{A collection now moves straight from runway to exhibition, archive, vault, red carpet, feed. Witnessed, preserved, circulated—rarely lived in.}

^{This is not automatically tragic. Some works should live in museums; fashion deserves rooms where impracticality remains sacred. But couture becomes unstable when the body disappears from its own purpose.}

^{Couture has never been democratic and pretending otherwise only weakens the argument for its survival. The question was never exclusivity. It's whether craft still serves intimacy: answering to one body, a private exchange between wearer and atelier. At its best, couture defends hand against speed. At its weakest, it becomes luxury's exquisite alibi: the hand's devotion lent to bless the machine it was meant to resist.}

^{Can couture remain faithful to its origin when its first audience is no longer the body in the atelier, but the screens waiting beyond it?}

^{Blazy's answer was the suit as second skin—work made at the scale of one body, legible to the wearer before the audience. The future of couture does not depend on becoming louder, but by the reminder it can do the one thing ready-to-wear cannot: make fashion answer to time, touch, and impossibility.}

^{Fantasy held without surrendering craft.}

^{Couture’s real modern test is to stop exhausting itself in pursuit of astonishment and keep its truth alive after the world has turned it into an image.}

^{Can it survive as image without surrendering to image? Can it be art without forgetting that its first medium is clothing?}

^{Beauty has always moved through my life like a current, pulling my attention towards image, atmosphere, feeling, form.}

^{Not ornament or vanity, more so, evidence.}

^{I have come to understand beauty as a deeply personal revelation—it gathers around what we long to make visible whilst quietly betraying what we hope to conceal.}

^{Fashion taught me this first: nothing remains mere material once it is placed on the body. Fabric absorbs intention. Gathering discipline, mourning, attraction, restraint, fantasy.}

^{Form is never neutral.}

^{I have trusted beauty as a form of meaning, even when applied to what is unpleasant: humiliation, grief, failure, disorder. If something is framed correctly, lit correctly, written correctly, perhaps it can be survived correctly. There is dignity in this instinct, finding form inside pain is not inherently false.}

^{Perhaps, it is the psyche refusing to let suffering become waste. Yet there is a difference between transfiguring pain and decorating wounds. One is meaning, the other, evasion.}

^{Fashion understands this because it does not remain abstract. It lives on the individual, entering a theater of desire, status, gender, appetite, permission. It teaches us how to look, how to be looked at, how to belong, how to refuse, how to become legible before we have become honest. Beneath fantasy, there is always belief arranging itself.}

^{Splendor does not absolve ugliness, it consecrates it. Hunger made elegant, captivity graceful, sadness atmospheric, chaos mythic. That is the strange violence of something exquisite: it can make what should disturb us feel worthy of preservation.}

^{I do not wish to become suspicious of beauty. To reduce it to vanity would be its own vulgarity. A failure of perception. Beauty gifts language. It teaches that the material world is not mute—a dress, photograph, room, a gesture can carry emotional and historical weight. It is not shallow by nature.}

^{Beauty, however, is not made innocent by being moving. It does not simply disguise the world, but exposes the terms on which we are willing to be deceived.}

^{Perhaps beauty’s deepest revelation is not the object, but the gaze.}

^{Ask yourself:}

^{What have I forgiven because it was exquisite? What have I called freedom because it photographed like it? What have I allowed to remain unnamed because naming it would disturb arrangement?}

^{Beauty is dangerous, it is sacred, it is proof; the pressure against a surface until something underneath confesses.}

^{One can appreciate magnificence and still ask what it costs, what it hides, what it permits, what it makes easier to forgive.}

^{The discipline is not to distrust beauty, it is to remain uncorrupted by what we adore.}

^{When fashion borrows from the atmosphere of its time, does the image ever really belong only to fashion?}

^{In the Chicago History Museum sits a Valentino evening gown from 1967, covered in black panthers.}

^{Accompanying it is a striking curatorial note.}

^{“It is not a mere coincidence that Valentino chose a print of black panthers to create this 1967 evening gown. The Black Panther Party was founded in California a year prior. Social change never influenced fashion more so than it did in the late 1960s.”}

The Movement Around the Motif

^{Whether Valentino intended the gown as a direct political reference is ultimately less interesting than the conditions under which the image appeared. It was created at a moment when symbols were acquiring a heightened degree of public force, fashion was becoming ever more permeable to surrounding social currents.}

^{The late 1960s were defined by efforts to challenge existing authority. The civil rights movement, second-wave feminism, anti-war activism, environmental consciousness, and youth counterculture contested inherited ideas about race, gender, class, nation, and respectability. As institutions were questioned, visual identity became increasingly consequential.}

^{Clothing had always communicated allegiance, status, and belief, but during this period its ideological function became increasingly deliberate and visible.}

^{The Black Panther Party understood the power of image with exceptional clarity.}

^{Founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland in 1966, the organization developed a visual language as disciplined as it was immediately recognizable. Leather jackets, berets, dark sunglasses, raised fists, and the panther itself produced an image of collective strength.}

^{Power was communicated through image long before it was understood through policy.}

The Uniform & The Gown

^{Fashion was undergoing a parallel transformation. Designers were abandoning rigid postwar elegance in favor of clothing that reflected changing ideas about identity, liberation, and self-expression. Miniskirts, psychedelic prints, military dressing, denim, leather, and clothing drawn from subcultures entered a wider visual field. Fashion was not simply reflecting social change—it was becoming one of the places in which that change could be rehearsed.}

^{Interpreted through this atmosphere, Valentino’s gown reveals far more than a decorative animal print. By 1967, the black panther had entered the public imagination as a symbol of autonomy, defiance, and strength. Whether consciously or unconsciously, the garment absorbed some of that meaning.}

^{This does not establish that Valentino consciously sought to align the gown with the Black Panther Party. Nor does the object need to be transformed into a political statement it may never have been designed to make. Intention, however, is only one part of an object’s meaning. A motif is not determined solely by what its designer wished to express; it is equally shaped by the lens its viewer possesses.}

^{The gown exists within that ambiguity. It is haute couture, one of fashion’s most rarefied and exclusive forms, yet it bears an image associated with a movement concerned with racial power, economic inequality, and social transformation. The distance between those worlds is substantial. Their visual collision is what makes the gown difficult to dismiss.}

^{It is not only beautiful—it is unstable.}

^{Fashion is often considered superficial because it deals in appearances, I argue that appearance is one of the primary ways power makes itself visible.}

^{Political movements adopt uniforms, institutions enforce dress codes, social classes refine their signals. Every era produces silhouettes that reveal what it admires, disciplines, fears, or desires.}

^{The panther gown reminds us that fashion does not emerge in isolation, but from the pulse of its culture.}

Alessandro Michele’s Valentino

^{Since Alessandro Michele’s appointment to Valentino in March 2024, his tenure has unfolded as an extraordinary homage to the house’s archives. Personally, it stands among the most compelling examples of archival revival in contemporary fashion, deserving of an essay in its own right.}

^{Under Michele, the panther has been subject to graphic treatments, and even T-shirts bearing the phrase “Panther 60 Lady.” The number nods to Valentino’s founding year, but the panther refuses to behave as a neutral logo. It arrives carrying decades of accumulated meaning, a symbol not only revived by Michele but repeatedly revisited by his predecessor, Pierpaolo Piccioli.}

^{The panther’s reappearance under Michele is revealing—he collapses couture, costume, souvenir, and merchandise by way of personal signature. An image once rendered across an evening gown can return decades later on a printed t-shirt, detached from its original material, silhouette, and setting.}

^{Michele is playful, commercial, knowingly nostalgic—an archive is full of symbols that have lived other lives. The panther gown reminds us that fashion is never separate from the world that produces it.}

^{Perhaps that is why the dress still feels relevant; it is not simply a beautiful object, nor is the panther simply a decorative motif. It is evidence that fashion and history are impossible to separate—a symbol enters couture, passes into museums, resurfaces on a T-shirt decades later.}
